From 27-28 September 2018, the Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences, Huye- Campus, organized and hosted an International conference on “The European Union, the East African Community, and the Continental Integration of Africa, in collaboration with Jean Monnet Network. Different scholars and policy-makers from around the world such as Denmark, UK, Germany, Greece, Moldova, Belgium, China, Australia, Poland, Kenya, South Africa, Nigeria, Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania and Rwanda had a good moment of sharing research findings and discussed on the challenges and opportunities of continental and regional integration of Africa. East Africa Community was observed as model of regional integration.
This conference is one of the main activities of Jean Monnet Network, an EU academic funded project, that bring scholars, policy makers and practitioners together to discuss challenges concerning regional integration and learn together on different collaborative strategies that could smooth the process of continental and regional integration. The two days conference also looked at how EU-Africa and China cooperation could be improved to build sustainable societies in Africa.

According to Professor Jean – Marc Trouille,” we all depend on one another, whatever happens in Europe affects Africa and whatever happens to Africa affects Europe”, thus collaboration becomes necessary. Both Europe and China have been playing a role in the economic development of Africa in General but economic sustainability of the continental depends on continental and regional integration. Among the issues presented and discussed were the challenges and possibilities of common market especially for East African Community, the free movement and the identity within the region. Harvested ideas from this two days conference were that, Africa is strong and a powerful continent however, its economy and politics will be sustainable through the possibilities of continental and regional integration. A more discussion on regional integration is more desirable, especially for young generation
