Workshop for new teaching staff members

Tuesday 29th January 2019, the Centre for Didactics and Research in Education (CEDRE) inducted all new PIASS teaching staff members. The focus of gathering was to help the new lecturers understand and own PIASS philosophy with regard to teaching, learning and assessment process. In her opening remarks, Prof. Penine UWIMBABAZI, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academics (DVCA) reminded the participants quality of instruction, good learning climate and competence based assessment as key to the success in terms of providing society with knowledgeable, skillful graduate with necessary job ethics.Moreover, she introduced participants to the meaning, organization and teaching in modular system. The coordinator of CEDRE,Mr NIYIBIZIEmmanuel, discussed with the participants on quality teaching framework and lecturer’s responsibility, reflection on competence based teaching and creation of conducive learning and the role of complex task in linking theory and world of reality as well as competence development.
The dean of faculty of education, Prof.Dr.NKUNDABATWARE Innocent introduced the participant, in reflecting on quality assessment framework .For him; lecturers are invited to think again about  (a) Why do teachers assess?, (2) How is assessment important for both students and lecturers? And (3) How do lecturers ensure the link between questions, content and objectives? The Dean discouraged assessments that are limited to marks allocation instead of ducking the level of competences.
New teaching staff members appreciated the induction session especially the level of competences, role of complex tasks, meaning and teaching in modular system. At the end of the workshop, participants suggested more sessions of professional development for quality teaching in their career.

CALL FOR PAPERS
 
The colloquium intends to be a forum for interactions between the grassroots organizations working on moral and social rearmament of the survivors of the genocide against the Tutsi, academics, members of community organisations, and policy makers. The present note is a call for papers.Applicants should read carefully the concept note attached to the present email as well as the proposed topics and submit a 250 word abstract no later than 20 January 2019.

Sharing Knowledge - Resolutions by Lay persons

The wave of “Sharing Knowledge with Communities” training seminar for lay persons engaged in the life the churches was organized from August 26 to September 1st. 100 lay persons were invited in two batches [ from Sunday 26 up to Wednesday 29th morning, then from Wednesday 29th afternoon to Saturday 1st September. Lay persons gathered from the same parishes of the pastors who attended the June 2018 seminars. Like them, they read and discussed in groups findings of research published in two books: Governance in Protestant churches; and Care for the environment.

We are pleased to announce availability of scholarships for 6 well-motivated and competent Rwandan students who would like to start pursuing the 3-year Honors Bachelor’s degree in Peace-Building and Development from October 22, 2018 at our Huye campus (See the program description attached). Currently, students from Rwanda, Burundi, the DR Congo, Tanzania and South Sudan are studying in this Bachelor’s degree program whose main aim is to foster a regional network of “peace-builders” across national boundaries.

 Together for the survival of our planet: our contribution to mitigate global warming and climate change
Is our planet under serious menace? If yes, to what extend? Whose responsibility is it? And what to do? Are developing countries in general and high learning institutions, churches and civil society organizations concerned by climate change and global warming?  This was the issues under investigation by the 7th PIASS Scientific Week which came to close on Sunday 22 July 2018 by 12.30. The three day conference concluded one year long research that focused on the theme: “Together for the survival of our planet: our contribution to mitigate global warming and climate change”. The question under investigation is a global concern; about the survival of our planet given continuous greenhouse gas emission that trigger rapid warming of our planet cause to  many catastrophes and disasters with millions of human loses.

On Friday, the 20thApril 2018, PIASS community was honored by the Visit of the Minister of Education Honorable Dr Eugene MUTIMURA.  After touring PIASS facilities, the Minister was impressed by the quality of Multimedia Educational Center which is being used as ICT laboratory and language teaching equipment. He requested other universities to take that center as a model to establish in their campuses.
